(i) GDP Data
The overall GDP value in 2005 was RMB ¥537.58 billion: RMB ¥95.96 billion from the primary industry, RMB ¥223.42 billion from the secondary industry and RMB ¥218.20 billion from the tertiary
industry.

(ii) Natural Resources
Land Resource
The land is fertile and productive. The total area of arable land is 5.74 million hectares, suitable for various crops.
Water Resource
The total volume of water resources is about 71.7 billion cubic meters. The complete system of flooding prevention, drainage and irrigation has been constructed.
Wildlife Resource
The forest covers an area of 3.6 million hectares with abundant species of plants , including over 300 sorts of woody plants, over 2,100 sorts of herbaceousplants and around 500 sorts
of vertebrates (fish not included), among which are 91 key wild
animals under national protection, and the most rare and precious
animals are Yangtze alligators and White-fin dolphins.
Mineral Resource
In Anhui, 138 kinds of minerals have already been discovered, 104 kinds have been ascertained for the deposit of reserves, and the total potential value of the mineral resource approaches
RMB ¥2,100 billion. Of the 45 minerals which have important effects on national economy, 31 are found in Anhui, 11 of which rank on the top 10 nationwide. Coal, iron, copper, sulphur and limestone are the five dominant minerals; while calcite, alumstone, attapulgite clay and bentomite are local feature minerals.




(iii) Business Development
The total value of import & exportreached US$9.12 billion in 2005, which ranked fi rst in the mid-west of China. While the scale of foreign trade is expanding rapidly, the manner of increase also
improves positively. The construction of famous brands and the appraisal of products have made new progress. The construction of export base is positively promoted. The ability in dealing with frictions in foreign trade has been reinforced. There is important
breakthrough in the opening of ports.
The utilization of foreign investment was US$1.69 billion in 2005. Cities, counties and development zones have played more important roles in attracting foreign investment, with reinforced subsequent forces of attracting foreign investment. Investment from the World Top 500 enterprises has increased.
Business volume of foreign economic cooperation in 2005 was US$280 million. Foreign contracting engineering and labor service cooperation have rapidly developed. Investment in foreign countries has been positively promoted. The foreign economy personnel have been further expanded. The administration of the enterprises invested in foreign countries and of export-oriented labor service has been further reinforced.
The total retail volume of consumer goods in 2005 reached RMB ¥ 1 7 6 . 5 billion, setting up a new high record of increase rate within 8 years since 1998. Modern communication modes such as chain-like management, distribution and e-business have rapidly developed. The commercial use of foreign investment is speeding up.

(iv) Industrial Foundation
Anhui has established a complete industrial system with all categories and subsidiary departments. The 49 industries which are on the list of Forbes Top 500 may find very good industrial foundation, ideal corresponding enterprises and cooperative partners here. Automobile and Architectural Machinery
Automobile and architectural machinery are the largest industries in Anhui. Currently, the architectural machinery
industry is on the top 3 nationwide, and the sales volume of automobiles on the top 6. Forklift, excavator, luxurious coach, chassis of automobiles, high-speed hydraulic press, large submersible pump, agricultural motors, meter board for automobiles and motorcars, vertical processing center, piston
ring and automobile fi lters are all advanced in technology and the output volume occupies a leading position in domestic market.
The automobile industry has grown rapidly, leading Anhui to one of the fastest developing provinces in automobile industry.
Along with the fast increase in output volume, the products have also grown from mono-product of heavy duty trucks to
Multicategories covering series of products of coaches & chassis, cars, light duty trucks, commercial vehicles and specialized vehicles. Famous automobile enterprises like Jianghuai
Auto, Chery Auto, Ankai Auto, Hefei Changhe, Xingma Specialized Vehicles have formed a competitive advantage.
Household Appliances
Anhui Household appliance industry occupies an important position in China with a number of famous joint ventured enterprises including Meiling, Royal Star, Simens, Hitachi and Sanyo. In 2005, Anhui produced 5.3 million household refrigerators, ranking the third in China; 4.41 million household washing machines, ranking the third in China; 3.33 million color TV sets, ranking the sixth in China, and 5.15 million chamber airconditioners, ranking the forth in China.
Electronic Products
The manufacture of electronic products is an important new – rising industry in Anhui. The dominant products are radar apparatuses microcomputer, TV sets, electronic apparatus, polypropylene electrical film, semi-conductor discrete compone nt , electronic component , electrical equipment of recorder and
mag netic mater ials , etc. There are a number of key enterprises with certain scale and feature, such as Hefei Haier, Anhui Kongka, Wuhu Start computer, Anhui Tongfeng Electronics, Tongling Sanjia Electronics, USTC iFLYTEK. Software industry also develops very
rapidly. There are over 100 software enterprises with more than 10 thousand employees in this line. Hefei Software Park and Wuhu Software Park are both the software development bases of the state
“Torch Project”
New-Type Architectural Materials
The main products of Anhui new architectural materials are listed as follows: PVC, PE, PP-R shaped materials and tubular
products which are used to replace traditional woody and steel materials and various types of interior decoration materials. A number of new-type key architectural enterprises as Conch Shaped Products, Guofeng Plastics, Anhui Baitong, Wuhu Huaya, etc have emerged and manifested influence in domestic markets.
Energy and Raw Materials
Five foundational industries of energy, architectural materials, metallurgical production, non-ferrous metals and chemical production have formed into state-level raw material industrial base and energy supply base. The Huainan and Huaibei Coal Mines are the largest coal production base in southern China. Ma Steel is an important iron & steel production base in China, and Tongling is an important copper smelting and processing base in China.
