Chinese Chopsticks
Published:2009-03-06 14:15    Review: Font Size> small   middle   big

Chopsticks are another ancient discovery above and beyond the four ancient Chinese inventions (gunpowder, compass, papermaking and printing). People began to use the eating utensil during the Shang Dynasty more than 3,000 years ago.
Chopsticks, used to lift food to the mouth, are basic accessories at Chinese meals. It is widely believed that Chinese have been using chopsticks since the 18th century BC.
Today chopsticks are usually made from wood or bamboo, or, sometimes, ivory or silver. They can be plain, lacquered and/or painted with floral or other designs. It has been said that emperors and empresses, in feudal times, used chopsticks that were made exclusively for them. It took a skilled craftsman about a month to make a pair of chopsticks—painted with the royal symbols of the coiling dragon and flying phoenix—for the emperor and empress.
