Present situation
China is a country with a fair system of education. Ninety-four per cent of the adult population is literate. A minimum of nine years of education is compulsory by law, meaning a student has to finish at least the primary school program and the junior middle-school program. Although higher education is optional, many Chinese students (1,108 million students) choose to continue their studies at one of China’s 1552 regular institutions of higher education. Investment in education accounts for about 3.28 % of total GDP.
Foreign Languages Teaching
As China strengthens its economy and accelerates towards becoming a fully fledged member of the global community, English, with its unique status as a worldwide language, will remain China’s number one foreign language. English is currently one of the three major subjects required by the college entrance examination. The quality of English education is subject to such factors as teaching materials, methods and examinations.
In order to prepare their students for a more international oriented job market an increasing number of higher education institutions now provide full or partial courses that are taught in English.
