Huazhong University of Science & Technology (HUST) ranks at the top of China's leading universities in comprehensive strength . In the University, there are eleven faculties including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, agriculture, science, engineering, medicine and management. It offers a variety of programs, including 75 undergraduate programs, 200 Master's programs, 139 doctoral programs and 22 post-doctoral research centers. It has 4 national leading laboratories, 4 national engineering research centers and 12 leading laboratories with ministerial or provincial level. It has more than 13,000 staff members, of whom 16 are academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences & the Chinese Academy of Engineering, over 600 are doctoral supervisors and more than 900 are professors. The full time resident students are over 50,000, of whom over 34,000 are undergraduates and more than 17,000 are postgraduates.

HUST keeps to the principle that “Cultivating students is the fundamental”. It has a very fine academic ambience. The University emphasizes fostering students’ pioneering spirit and practical ability and producing tip-top talents as well. In Chinese high institutions, it first upheld and conducted humanistic education to push forward the combination of scientific education and humanity education. Recently, the employment rate of HUST graduates lies in the top of leading Chinese universities. The University strengthens establishment of innovation system and improvement of innovation ability, particularly stresses innovation of sources in scientific research to advance sustained, coordinated and stable development of scientific research

Admission Catalogue

I. Entry Qualification

Undergraduate: High school graduates or above;
Supporting documents: a. high school diploma;
                                       b. related transcripts;

Master candidate: Graduated from a university or above;
Supporting documents: a. university diploma, certificate of Bachelor's Degree; b. university transcripts; c. two recommendation letters from professor or assoc. professor;

PhD candidate: Having obtained Master's Degree;
Supporting documents: a. certificate of Master's Degree; b. transcripts of Master program; c. two recommendation letters from professor or assoc. professor;
General students for further studies: The applicant should have completed at least 2 years of undergraduate study or have equvalent level of education, be healthy.

Senior student for further studies: The applicant should hold a Bachelor's degree or above and have at least two-year working experience, be healthy.

Student learning Chinese language, culture or history: The applicant should be interested in the Chinese language, Chinese culture or Chinese history, be healthy.

II. Application for Entrance

1. The Chinese Government Scholarships: The applicant should first submit application materials to his/her own government department for such exchange programs, and obtain necessary form from Chinese Embassy(Consulate) by the end of February. These application materials should be completely filled in and submitted to the Chinese Administrative Commission for Fund of Studying Abroad either by the Chinese Embassy or by the Embassy of the student's home country in China before April 30. Once the application materials are reviewed and are admitted by the university in compliance with relevant regulation, the applicant may be awarded a government scholarship provided by Chinese Scholarship Council(CSC).

2. All applicants must complete and submit the Application Form for Foreigners Wishing to Study in China, the Physical Examination Record for Foreigners, a notarized copy of the highest diploma and transcripts. Those wishing to study for their Master's or Doctoral degrees should submit in addition two recommendation letters from professor, associate professors or people holding an equivalent title.

3. Self-supported students or those with schoolarship provided by their own government is advised to get into contact with the Foreign Students Office directly to obtain the application form. An admitted applicant will be sent admission notification and the relevant documents for following the formalities of coming to China as a bearer of X visa.

III. Date of enrollment

1. One who wishes to enroll in the fall semester should submit his/her application before June 30

2. One who wishes to enroll in the spring semester should submit his/her application before December 30.

3. The application dossier should be sent by post, fax or E-mail direct to College of International Education of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. One who wishes to enroll in advanced studies in Chinese or a short-term cultural training program can contact the offices concerned any time.

IV. Records, examinations and credentials

There will be examinations in all courses taken. A student who has completed his/her studies according to schedule and passed the examination(s) will be awarded a certificate of completion of studies or a diploma.

V. Academic and degree certificates

1. A degree student who has completed all courses according to schedule and the total credit hours will be awarded a diploma as well as a bachelor',master'or doctor's degree certificate in accordance with the Academic Degree Regulations of the People’s Republic of China. One who has failed to meet the academic requirements will be issued a certificate of completion of studies provided this is in conformity with the relevant regulations.

2. A non-degree student will be issued a certificate of completion of studies upon conclusion of learning provided the relevant requirements have been met. One who has failed to meet the requirements will be issued a transcript.

VI. Tuition fees (not including scholarship students)

1. Enrollment and registration fees: RMB 500 yuan (US$60) (to be paid at enrollment)

2. Tuition:

Degree students

Bachelor candidate:
RMB20,700 yuan (US$2,500/academic year in science and engineering program
RMB15,700 yuan (US$1,900) in liberal arts program

Master candidate:
RMB27,300 yuan (US$3,300)/academic year in science and engineering program
RMB19,100 yuan (US$2,300)/academic year in liberal arts program

Doctoral candidate:
RMB38,200 yuan (US$4,600)/academic year in science and engineering program
RMB25,700 yuan (US$3,100)/academic year in liberal arts program

Non-degree students

General students:
RMB22,300 yuan (US$2,700)/academic year in science and engineering program
RMB15,600 yuan (US$1,900)/a

cademic year in liberal arts program
RMB13,150 yuan (US$1,600) )/academic year in Chinese Language program

Senior students: RMB2,9000 yuan (US$3,500)/academic year in science and engineering program

Short-term students (a class will not be opened until there are 10 students and above):

1) Short-term Chinese language sessions
RMB820 yuan (US$100) 1 week; RMB2,500 yuan (US$300) 4 weeks; RMB5,300 yuan (US$650) 8 weeks

2) Chinese culture sessions
Tuition to be determined through mutual consultation according to the duration of study, the course content and the route of touring

3) In the case of a prior agreement between the two parties, tuition and related costs shall be determined in accordance with the agreement reached by the two parties.

Medical Students

Degree students

Transfer undergraduate students: RMB25,000 yuan (US$3,000)/academic year
Undergraduate students: RMB33,000 yuan (US$4,000)/academic year
Master's candidate: RMB40,000 yuan (US$4,900)/academic year
Doctoral candidate: RMB50,000 yuan (US$6,000)/academic year

Non-degree students

General mid-career student: RMB20,800 yuan (US$2,500)/academic year
Senior mid-career student: RMB40,000 yuan (US$4,900)/academic year in science and engineering program


Language Degree Programs



I. Bachelor’s degree program

Program: Chinese Language and Literature, program length 4~5 years
Courses: An Introduction to Linguistics, A History of Ancient Chinese Literature, Modern Chinese, Reading and Writing
Application requirement: having the same educational level as that of a Chinese high school graduate

II. Master’s degree program

Program: 1. Linguistics and Applied Linguistics
                 2. Ancient Chinese Literature, program length 3-4 years
Application requirement: Bachelor’s degree holders

III. Ph. D program

Program: Linguistics and Applied Linguistics
Application requirement: Master’s degree holders


Language Non-Degree Programs

Long-term Programs (1-2 years)

Program: the Chinese Language, program length 1~2 years
Courses: Modern Chinese (listening, speaking, reading and writing), Chinese for Science and Technology, Chinese for Medicine
Type of Classes: Introductory, Elementary, Intermediate, Advanced class

1. Introductory class
Courses: Crash Chinese, Chinese 300.
Aim: Students will be enabled to listen to, speak, read and write in Chinese

2. Elementary class
Courses: Elementary Chinese, A Survey of China
Aim: Students will have the general ability for reading, listening, speaking, writing and translating Chinese

3. Intermediate class
Courses: Middle Level Chinese, A Survey of China
Aim: Graduates will be enabled to engage in higher level learning and social activities while possessing the ability for work of definite specialized character

4. Advanced class
Courses: Advanced Chinese, Translation from or into Chinese, Chinese Culture
Language practice: Irregular visits, tours and other extracurricular activities will be organized free of charge to help with classroom teaching.
Application requirement: having the same educational level as that of a graduate from a Chinese senior high school
Aim: After 1 year of learning: pass Band 3 proficiency examination in Chinese HSK
After 2 years of learning: pass Band 6 or Band 8 proficiency examination in Chinese HSK

Short-term Programs ( 1-8 weeks)

Program length: 1-8 weeks
1. Chinese Language
2. Chinese Culture
Application requirement: Age: 18-65 No restrictions on record of formal learning

Aim: learning about Chinese gardening art and Asian architectural characteristics
Tuition: RMB2,900 (US$350) for 1 month

China’s Economy and Business Studies

Short-term class (instruction in English or Chinese)

1. China's Economic Reform and Development (40 class hours)

investment abroad
4. Learning about China’s policies, laws and regulations for trade and investment activities of foreign business in China
5. Developing abilities to engage in economic transactions, trade and commercial work in China
