Old Peking: photographs by unknown photographers presented here a selection of black and white photographs that were made slides and emailed to me by my friend and I copied them and posted them on my column of ebeijing. The selection displays part of the imperial city that would be an interesting comparison with the modernized metropolitan Beijing today, for instance the procession of the imperial sacred carriage inside the courtyard of the forbidden City.
Readers may find inspiration in the ancient life of Peking and the activities of ordinary working people. Old photographs that recorded the process of making and creating the old civilization in China would certainly be a thrill at all times.
These photographs document buildings that no longer exist in Beijing, or that are inaccessible to the public as well as traditional traffic roads that are no longer practiced in the same way today. As such, the collection of photographs is an important historical archive relating to the look of the city and the lives of its inhabitants that have changed beyond recognition since the turn of 20th century.
